James W. Newland

Nov. 6, 1946 - April 11, 1966

Airman 2/c Jim Newland, 19, was fatally injured Monday, April 11, 1966, around 8 a.m. in a three-car accident north of Big Cabin, OK, on U.S. 69.

It was reported that four persons from Sherman, TX, had minor injuries. Jim had spent the Easter weekend here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eldred Newland of rural Neodesha. He had left home early that morning to return to his station with the Strategic Air Command, Little Rock AFB, Jacksonville, AR.

Jim was born Nov. 6, 1946, in Chanute to Eldred and Frances (Hansen) Newland and moved to Neodesha as a child. He graduated from NHS in 1964.

He was active in the agriculture department in high school. In 1964 he was awarded the State Farmer Award at Kansas State University. Before entering the Air Force, he attended one semester at Independence Community College.

He entered the service Jan. 17, 1965, and took his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, TX. He attended Aero Space Missile School, Lowry AFB, Denver, CO. At the time of his death he was stationed with SAC in the MMS Loading Section at Little Rock Air Force Base.

He was survived by his parents; three sisters, Mrs. Judith Ann Plumlee, Pittsburg, Kan., and Misses Dolores and Jean Newland of the home; four brothers, Albert H. Newland, Oakland, Calif., and Junior, Joe and John of the home; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Archie Newland, Neodesha; maternal grandfather, Albert Hansen, Chanute; and several aunts and uncles, among them Mrs. Charles Davis, Neodesha.

Jim was a member of the St. Ignatius Catholic Church. The Rosary was recited at Davis Memorial Chapel. The Rev. M.W. O'Malley officiated at the Requiem Mass at St. Ignatius Church. A full military burial service was conducted at the graveside in the Neodesha Cemetery by personnel from the Air Force Base at Wichita. Air Force men also were the casket bearers.
